History Of Scented Candles, Part 2

Partners alienated by long distances – prior to the advent of an efficient postal service and email – got creative and worn scented candles melted with sealing wax to imprint their unique watermark on love letters. The faint smell from the aromatic candles gave a particular touch to the letters, acting as an extension of a lover’s kiss or hug for most couples who waste extended periods away from each other, becoming keepsakes in the due course.

With the breakthrough of beeswax and stearic acid as alternatives to tallow and other waxes, perfumes became simpler to fit in candle-crafting. Only the richest were able to pay for these candles because of the towering monetary value of beeswax. Ironically, shortly after this the light bulb was fame began to decrease.
 
The Industrial Revolution saw the resurgence of the candle’s popularity owing to concern over how to use modern byproducts. It results to a lot of these byproducts could be used for candle-making, and these materials were retailed to interested industrialists at low costs.

As a means to encourage customers to buy candles (since electrical energy supplied them with all the lighting they required), candle-crafters began using different molds, colorings and fragrances. It was the former that turned out to be the most appealing feature for customers, and perfumed candles finally established its place in the contemporary world. 

Aromatic candles have also always been famous in Indian and Oriental cultures. This provided perfumed candles its recognition as a mark for “hippies” who were enamored with Eastern civilization and the New Age development.  

The 1990s formed an absolutely diverse association with aromatic candles as “ragged chic” and culturally diverse interior design which integrated them became famous. For instance, Martha Stewart’s ever-convenient Do-It-Yourself home projects consisted of making scented candles.

The presently ballooning {preoccupation with fitness and wellness also generated a “spa” or “wellness” trend that sent people searching for more and more ways to ease stress in their ever more taxing everyday lives. Again, scented candles completed an appearance as a simple and cost-friendly means to relax the senses while at home or even during work.

It seems that perfumed candles have become as much a part of contemporary way of living and its long and colorful history seems to ensure its rank as light-giver to our residences and spirits for decades to come.
